A technical SEO audit is only useful if it's systematic โ random spot-checks miss the issues that actually matter. This is the checklist, roughly in the order we work through it, on every site we audit.
Crawlability & indexing
- Robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking important sections
- XML sitemap exists, is submitted to Search Console, and lists only indexable URLs
- No stray
noindextags left over from staging or migrations - Canonical tags point to the correct preferred URL on every page
- No orphaned pages โ every important page is reachable through internal links
Site speed & Core Web Vitals
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP) within Google's "good" threshold
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1 โ no unexpected content jumps
- Images compressed and served in modern formats
- Render-blocking CSS/JS minimised above the fold
Site structure
- Logical URL structure โ descriptive, not parameter-heavy
- Clear category/subcategory hierarchy, no more than 3 clicks to any page
- Breadcrumb navigation present on deep pages
- Pagination handled correctly (no duplicate content across paged listings)
Mobile usability
- Mobile experience checked as the primary version (mobile-first indexing)
- Tap targets sized appropriately, no overlapping elements
- Text readable without zooming, no horizontal scroll
Structured data (schema markup)
- LocalBusiness/Organization schema present and accurate
- Service or Product schema on relevant pages
- FAQPage schema where genuine Q&A content exists
- All schema validated with Google's Rich Results Test โ no errors
Duplicate content & technical hygiene
- HTTPS enforced site-wide, no mixed-content warnings
- www vs non-www resolved to a single consistent version
- No thin or near-duplicate pages competing for the same keyword
- 404 pages return proper status codes, not soft-404s

Most of these checks take minutes individually but compound into real ranking impact when several are broken at once. Run through this list quarterly, or before any major site change, and you'll catch issues long before they show up as a ranking drop.
